Using a new technique Pipex have successfully replaced a section of steel pipe on the Grande America container vessel with a GRP flexible repair system.
The project involved the fabrication and replacement of a section of corroded steel pipe at the connection to a Glass Reinforced Epoxy (GRE) pipe. A section of GRE pipe 100mm long was used to fill the gap created by the corrosion. This was then over wrapped with Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) matting and then covered with a stainless steel shroud. The shroud fitted tightly over the GRP and then bolted in place to create a strong seal while the GRP set.
The flexible repair system can be used on a wide range of pipe diameters & allows for a temporary and effective repair to be undertaken in the short amount of time permitted in a busy shipping schedule.
